Born Rich

With this extra credit I chose to watch and now write about the movie titled “Born Rich” which talks about how children being born rich are almost thrust into this position of power after really doing nothing to earn it. It also talks to the audience about how easily people knowing that you now or have always had money get them into all sorts of trouble. Like such things as slander in the papers, family bonds broken by business, and even kids being harassed for the amount of money that they have. Also they talk to us about how they’re scared almost to have the weight of the money on their shoulders; it puts all kind of pressure on them to accomplish things such as their parents had previously done before them. So then in this paper I will be talking about how identity as well as other things we talked about in class, and what we can actually learn from this production.

So to start off with this first paragraph I want to talk about how identity relates to the topic of born rich. The reason that identity relates to the video is that because these kids show the world what makes them, them and how there different from anyone else. And the reason behind this is because unlike all the other very rich people in the world view it as tacky or jut straight out wrong to discuss their wealth because it open them up for a whole ton of controversy. You can tell the children’s identity in the movie is unique to them though because unlike their parents they don’t mind to talk about their money the only thing really holding them back from what they wanted to accomplish was simple as what their parents would think if they just went off talking about all of the families money and bragging about how much they actually have.

Now How exactly does what happened in this short film correlate to what we learned in class. That’s a simple answer as they start to talk about the American dream it is an insight into our culture and how even though we are such a developed country we still hold our rich up on a huge pedastool and put the poor into a whole just like a 3rd world country would to. Also another thing that they talked about that related to our class was about how the people around us influence how we react to things and usually what kind of person we are later in life. Such as with Donald Trump’s daughter just the way she acts on camera and her connection to her father show us just how much influence family members as well as others close to you have on you.

Now in conclusion this was really an eye opener into what a lot of rich kids actually feel like and if they actually want the responsibility. Because I know before I began watching I had the same misconceptions about rich people considering that I come from a poorer family and had to struggle for some things throughout my life so I felt some of the hate. Then after watching I mean I still feel like the rich kids are worried about things that even if they don’t do there set but still I see them in a better light because they feel as if giving back more would be good as well as why do they deserve this money considering they never did anything to gain up and earn it. So overall I am very happy that I chose this assignment because I did give me a lot of insight into the life of Americas wealthy.

Cultural Assignment #2 Q -1

This week I took some at least to me some very interesting pictures such as some of stuff like my shoes, basketball, and Xbox. Also some other things that I chose to take a look at where my car, my yanks hat and stuff around that area.

To me this stuff describes our culture in a very enlightening way. Such as with the Xbox because in American culture nowadays this would be something that really sparks up and put us on the map. Because if you look around there is usually not one guy that doesn’t spend a ton of time doing every day. Who knows why that is but to me its most likely because of the recent influx of technology and it being more acceptable for kids to stay inside all day instead of going out and playing all day like the children of the past including me used to do.

Another one for me would be the pictures of my shoes and my basketball. This describes our American culture in such a way and the reason behind this is very simple. This is because these two things are held very hi up in the mind of Americans. This is because at least for me my shoes are a staple of my identity because they show the public my creativity my spunk and how clean and cut I can be. Then with the basketball it shows Americas love for sports. This peaks into our culture because if you look at most all Americans the most thing they watch on TV is sports and for the soul purpose of the excitement and overall enjoyment of not knowing who will win and what unexpected might happen in the game or match.

In short closing these might be a staple of our American culture. But where the American culture really comes from is from the heart and from the experiences that happens every day in our life.

Cultural Assignment #2 Q-2

In this question it asked me to find a song that describes me and my individuality. And for me this was an easy pick because of me loving this song and because it is a song that reminds me of were I came from as well as how I grew up and the fun old times I’ve had with all my friends so that’s why I chose the song Wagon Wheel by: the old crow medicine show.

This reasons behind me loving this song are many but the one main one that makes me love it is that it shows me that old small town feel which is the kind of life I grew up in. And in the song it gives the feel that they do not have a lot of money and I can feel that because being a college student I don’t hardly ever  have any free cash to go around and just spend it on whatever I want.

Secondly something that else from the song that describes me and my individuality would be that when you listen to the song it speaks about a bunch of stories portrayed by melodies. And I say this shows a light into me because everyday in my life me and my friends make our own wonderful stories that we will remember for the rest of our lives. This is showing that we are true friends and that along with the song if we want to do something we just do it so that we have no regrets later on in life unlike a lot of people in this world today that always wish they could have done more with.

In conclusion this song has brought happiness to me all of my friends and pushed through and shown everybody what really makes us, us. So if you ever listen to the song hopefully you get the same feeling I do as well as see what shows my individuality.

O.C.M.S – Wagon Wheel

Headed down south to the land of the pines
And I’m thumbin’ my way into North Caroline
Starin’ up the road
Pray to God I see headlights

I made it down the coast in seventeen hours
Pickin’ me a bouquet of dogwood flowers
And I’m a hopin’ for Raleigh
I can see my baby tonight

So rock me mama like a wagon wheel
Rock me mama anyway you feel
Hey mama rock me
Rock me mama like the wind and the rain
Rock me mama like a south-bound train
Hey mama rock me

Runnin’ from the cold up in New England
I was born to be a fiddler in an old-time stringband
My baby plays the guitar
I pick a banjo now
[ Lyrics ]
Oh, the North country winters keep a gettin’ me now
Lost my money playin’ poker so I had to up and leave
But I ain’t a turnin’ back
To livin’ that old life no more

So rock me mama like a wagon wheel
Rock me mama anyway you feel
Hey mama rock me
Rock me mama like the wind and the rain
Rock me mama like a south-bound train
Hey mama rock me

Walkin’ to the south out of Roanoke
I caught a trucker out of Philly
Had a nice long toke
But he’s a headed west from the Cumberland Gap
To Johnson City, Tennessee

And I gotta get a move on before the sun
I hear my baby callin’ my name
And I know that she’s the only one
And if I die in Raleigh
At least I will die free

So rock me mama like a wagon wheel
Rock me mama anyway you feel
Hey mama rock me
Rock me mama like the wind and the rain
Rock me mama like a south-bound train
Hey mama rock me

Cultural Assignment #1

Cultural Assignment #1

I’m asked by the questions we have for this class what makes or in a better term exemplifies American culture. From my perspective it is a number of things weather these are ranging from the way we talk our arrogance our false sense of confidence or many other things who knows but I intend to discuss that in this short paper.

First I want to talk about how the social interaction that I participate in and also witness exemplifies the American culture that we all are a part of today. When I’m with my friends to me I think we define American culture by how different we are but still at the same time how similar we are. When we talk to each other we talk about past good times or what coming up as well as things we are doing at this time. I won’t lie when  we me and my friends talk we do like to push envelop and cuss a lot but that doesn’t mean we don’t get along or our conversations don’t have a point because they do. Now when you watch conversations happen you might see someone agree with something then when they walk away they talk behind their back showing how unique this side of American culture is because I don’t believe you would see someone for another culture doing the same thing.

Secondly I want to talk about how people interact or by witnessing it shows us the culture of a group. By witnessing it I saw in high school that like with our girl’s volleyball team they were and still are top dogs around the state. But being an outsider it looked to all of us football player like they were a sort of cult and we also felt jealous because when we did something good we heard nothing but when they did they get a police escort and parade out of town. Then from our side of being on the football team we had pride we played for each other and the respect of the teams that came before us and if we weren’t up to par we would hear about it. So we came together and during the season the only people football players were with was there other teammates either at practice, lunch, watching film, Thursday night dinners or finally Friday morning breakfasts these all contributed into bringing us together as one team.

Finally and in conclusion I was asked what was one thing this week that exhibits individuality and what I came up with was this. My best friend had moved back home after not enjoying his time here and he wanted me to follow him after this semester and I was going to do it and I was already staring the process. But after a very inspirational talk from my advisor I took it on my own to tell him I’m staying at IUP and I’m currently looking for a place of my own for next year. So this is how I see that the individuality in me was expressed.

Individualism as a Cultural Value

2 04 2012
  1. Three topics that americans often think as rude to me would be when some one talks to them about eather how much money money they make, how they discipline there kids and also there personel life. For the first one the reasons americans hate it is because they view it as if I tell them they might try and rob me. As for the second one I would say its because they don’t want people to know or mess with how they handle there children, and finally for the last one if they don’t really know you they hate giving out that info for reasons of it being akward.
  2. These concepts differ because of the culture that we grow up with and are taught in life such as how to handle a situation or such. Also it points to saying that americans or more carefree and or arrogant then thai people are so with just about everything our ways of life are exact opposites.
  3. The one experience that comes to mind in this situation would have to be that turning 18 as an American its almost a right of passage were when you turn 18 like I did a year ago a main thought running through a lot of teens heads at the time is its time to move out go to college and start a life of my own by myself and for myself. Were as in other countrys a teen may stay around his family longer for the help they need as well as when they branch off there still a deep part of that family.
